GAME NOTES: An instate rivalry will be renewed Friday night, as the Furman Paladins play host to the Clemson Tigers in the 149th meeting between these two teams.
Furman is fresh off a dominating 90-71 win over Southern Wesleyan. The win came after a deflating 68-47 lopsided loss to Columbia to open the season. Furman finished 15-16 overall a year ago and isn't expected to factor into the Southern Conference race this season. Still, Jeff Jackson gets some players back that struggled with injuries a year ago and the hope is that a healthy roster can keep the Paladins competitive night-in and night-out. The Paladins will close out a season-opening four-game homestand next week against Brevard.
Clemson is a team that would like to make some noise in the always tough ACC. but a lack of returning talent could make it a rebuilding year. Brad Brownell's squad did get off to a fast start, with an impressive 77-44 blasting of Presbyterian in the season-opener.
These two teams have squared off 148 times in their history. Clemson has won the last 28 games between these two teams, winning 59-49 in the most recent matchup on November 15, 2011. They have not played at Furman since the 1992-93 season. The last time Furman won a game against the Tigers was in January of 1978.
The Tigers won their season opener in dominating fashion in a 33-point laugher. Milton Jennings led the team with 15 points, knocking down 6-of-7 shots from the floor, while grabbing six rebounds. He was joined in double- figure scoring by Jordan Roper and Devin Booker, with 11 points each. Brownell will have his hands full trying to get this team to the success level he is used to. If Jennings continues to improve his play, and take more shots, he could be one of the ACC's top players.
The Paladins got off to a rough start, losing 68-47 to Columbia, but came back strong with a 90-71 demolition of Southern Wesleyan. Furman has three players averaging in double figures after the first two games, including twin brothers Colin and Charlie Reddick. Colin leads the team with 13.5 ppg, while Charlie is averaging 10.5 ppg. Larry Wideman has contributed 13.0 ppg, including 18 points last time out. In his first start, Stephen Croone tied a Furman record against with 14 assists against the Warriors.
Brownell and the Tigers should extend their series streak to 29 wins, as Furman has been inconsistent with its only win against non-Division I competition in Southern Wesleyan.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Clemson 71, Furman 64
