Evansville, IN (Sports Network) - Colt Ryan finished with 22 points to lead the Evansville Purple Aces to an 84-72 win over the Tennessee Tigers, in the first round of the 2013 CollegeInsider.com Tournament at the Ford Center.
Ned Cox added 16 points for the Purple Aces (19-14), shooting 4-of-6 behind the 3-point line, while Egidijus Mockevicius logged eight points and pulled down eight rebounds.
The Tigers (18-15) were led by a pair of double-doubles, with Kellen Thornton finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds, not to mention five steals, and Robert Covington contributing 19 points, 13 boards, four steals and three blocked shots. Patrick Miller added 18 points, six boards and four assists.
Evansville shot 47.1 percent from the field in the first half as it took a 38-29 lead at the break. Tennessee State struggled from the field at only 31.4 percent, including just 3-of-14 from beyond the 3-point arc.
After intermission the Purple Aces got hot from the perimeter, knocking down 7-of-10 from 3-point distance, shooting 48.3 percent from the field overall in the period. The Tigers improved to 47.4 from the floor, but continued to have trouble from long range (4-of-18). Evansville pushed the lead as high as 20 points in the frame as it cruised to victory.
The Purple Aces, who advance to the next round of the tourney against an opponent to be determined, forced 17 turnovers and outscored TSU at the free- throw line, 15-7.
