Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Kellen Thornton posted 17 points and 10 rebounds for Tennessee State as the Tigers captured a comfortable 84-65 win over the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles in Ohio Valley Conference action at the Gentry Center.
Joining Thornton with 17 points for the Tigers (13-10, 7-3 OVC) were Patrick Miller and Robert Covington, followed by M.J. Rhett and Jordan Cyphers with 13 and 10 points, respectively, as the team snapped a three-game slide.
The Golden Eagles (8-13, 2-7), losers of four of the last five outings, were paced by Jud Dillard who tallied a game-high 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds, but he also turned the ball over eight times before fouling out. Dennis Ogbe responded with 17 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots in a reserve role, while Jeremiah Samarrippas accounted for 12 points but missed all nine of his tries beyond the arc.
Tech had an awful time shooting the ball in the first half, connecting on a total of just six field goals and missing all but two of 12 tries on the perimeter, en route to a 41-23 deficit at the break.
The Golden Eagles looked much better in the second half, but the Tigers kept their distance by converting 16-of-18 at the charity stripe in the period.
The visitors were guilty of a staggering 24 turnovers, which TSU traded in for 32 points on the night.
