Cape Girardeau, MO (Sports Network) - Tyler Stone led all scorers with 23 points to go along with nine rebounds, as the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks opened their Ohio Valley Conference slate with a 65-60 win over Tennessee-Martin at the Show Me Center.
Nino Johnson recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds to help the Redhawks (9-6, 1-0 OVC) rally for their sixth victory in their last eight outings.
Jeremy Washington (10 rebounds) and Myles Taylor scored 14 apiece for the Skyhawks (3-10, 0-1), who have now dropped five in a row. Tobias Dowdell added nine points and 10 boards in 19 minutes off the bench.
UTM led by as many as 15 midway through the first half, as a 3-pointer by Mike Liabo gave the Skyhawks a 21-6 cushion with 9:39 to play until halftime. However, SEMO answered with a 16-2 run and managed to cut the deficit to 30-27 at the break.
SEMO shot 50 percent from the floor after halftime while holding UTM to 33.3- percent shooting. The second half featured four ties and five lead changes, as the Redhawks did not pull away until late. A three-point play by Stone with 2:23 remaining gave the Redhawks a 63-58 lead, their largest of the game.
After making only 9-of-22 free throws in the first half, the Redhawks went 9- of-14 at the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes. For the game, they committed only seven turnovers and also played well defensively, limiting UTM to 35.4-percent shooting from the floor.
