(Wednesday, December 5)
Final Score: Loyola Marymount 92, Northern Arizona 86 (OT)
Flagstaff, AZ (Sports Network) - The Lions of Loyola Marymount scored the first five points of overtime, on their way to a 92-86 victory over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in non-conference play at the Walkup Skydome.
Anthony Ireland helped lead the way for the Lions (5-4) as he tallied a game- high 28 points, adding six assists and four steals for a team that won a second straight outing. Before fouling out, Ashley Hamilton contributed 24 points and six rebounds, while Ayodeji Egbeyemi and Bruce English accounted for 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Lumberjacks (3-5), losers of two of the last three, were paced by DeWayne Russell with 23 points and six assists, followed by Gabe Rogers with 22 points. Off the bench it was Max Jacobsen with a double-double consisting of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams shot at least 50 percent from the floor in the first half, but thanks to an 8-of-16 showing behind the three-point line in the frame, it was LMU that moved out to a 49-38 advantage at the break.
In the second half the Lions again had the hot hand on the perimeter (5-of-7), but NAU refused to back down as it converted 63.0 percent from the floor. Ireland scored five straight points for the visitors down the stretch, including a three-pointer with 31 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 80-80.
Falling behind in the extra session, the Lumberjacks made just 1-of-12 from the floor, coming up empty on six tries out on the perimeter, as Loyola held on for the win.
The victory for the Lions was also the 300th NCAA head coaching win for Max Good. He improves to 300-302 in his fifth season at LMU and 21st season as an NCAA head coach.
