Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - Will Cherry sank a crucial free throw with two seconds left in regulation to lift the Montana Grizzlies to a 61-60 victory over the Sacramento State Hornets in a Big Sky Conference matchup at the Nest.
Mathias Ward scored 16 points to lead Montana (6-4, 2-0 Big Sky). Kareem Jamar added 11 points and Cherry chipped in 10 points as the Grizzlies won for the third time in four games.
John Dickson led four players in double figures for Sacramento State (6-4, 1-1) with 15 points, Mikh McKinney added 14 points, Dylan Garrity chipped in 12 points and Konner Veteto had 10 points to match 10 rebounds. The Hornets have lost three of their last four.
Montana secured a 25-20 lead at the half by shooting at a 40.0 percent clip while holding Sacramento State to just 25.0 percent shooting. The Hornets remained within striking distance with a 7-3 edge from the free throw line.
The Grizzlies led by as many as 13 points in the second half but the Hornets came storming back and used a 13-4 run to come within four points in the final minute. Garrity would then hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds remaining to tie the score 60-60. On the Grizzlies' next possession Cherry was fouled and made 1-of-2 shots from the free throw line and Garrity missed a 3-point attempt on the other end to secure the win for Montana.
Sacramento State lost despite a 35-24 edge in rebounds.
