(Friday, November 16)
Final Score: Oklahoma 63, Texas-Arlington 59
Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Romero Osby recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to help the Oklahoma Sooners escape the College Park Center with a 63-59 non-conference victory over the Texas-Alrington Mavericks.
Buddy Hield scored a team-high 17 points off the bench for the Sooners (2-0), who defeated ULM by 34 points in their season opener. Steven Pledger added 11 points in a team-high 29 minutes of action.
Kevin Butler paced UTA (1-1) with 16 points while Karol Gruszecki provided 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor. Jordan Reves was a force in the middle with 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
It seemed as if the Sooners first visit to the College Park Center was going to be a breeze as they forced 14 turnovers on their way to a 38-28 halftime lead. UTA trailed at the intermission after making just 2-of-8 attempts from beyond the arc in the opening half.
The Mavericks charged back in front of their school-record crowd of 6,421 with some stifling defense. UTA held Oklahoma to just five makes on 21 field goal attempts after the break, but the Sooners made 14 free throws to stay in front. UTA trailed by 16 points early in the second half before rallying to tie up the score at 57-57 with 2:46 left to play. Pledger knocked down a three-pointer on his team's next possession to give Oklahoma a lasting advantage on the scoreboard.
This was the first time in history a member of the Big 12 Conference visited UTA. The Mavericks' poor free throw shooting was the difference as they went 12-of-21 at the charity stripe in the loss.
