Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - Steve Forbes sank a pair of free-throws with one second remaining in the extra session to lift the IUPU-Fort Wayne Mastodons to a 96-95 overtime victory over the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks in a Summit League thriller at Ralston Arena.
Forbes finished with team-highs of 21 points and six rebounds as IPFW (22-9, 10-4 Summit) concluded its regular season with its third consecutive win. Luis Jacobo added 20 points, while Joe Edwards provided a spark off the bench with 18 points. Pierre Bland recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists, which he accompanied with four steals.
Marcus Tyus led the Mavericks (16-14, 5-9) with 21 points in 27 minutes off the bench. C.J. Carter tallied 20 points and five assists, while John Karhoff contributed 14 points and eight boards. Mike Rostampour added 13 points and nine rebounds and Justin Simmons had 12 points.
Omaha connected on 42.4 percent of its field goal tries and converted 13-of-14 shots at the charity stripe in the first half. The Mastodons went into the break trailing, 45-43, despite shooting 56 percent from the floor, including a 5-of-11 clip from beyond the arc in the opening period.
IPFW used an 11-2 run to erase a nine-point deficit and tie the score at 71 by the 3:46 mark of the second half. Mo Evans made a pair of free-throw attempts with eight seconds left in regulation to give the Mastodons an 82-79 lead before Devin Patterson drained a 3-pointer for Omaha to even the score. IPFW failed to answer as Jacobo missed a last second attempt from 3-point range.
In overtime, Omaha held a 95-90 lead with 27 seconds left. The Mastodons rallied back as Forbes made two free-throw attempts and Bland put in a layup. The Mavericks committed turnovers on their final two possessions an Forbes drew contact on a 3-point attempt with one second left. After sinking his first two attempts, Forbes missed his third free throw try and Omaha did not have enough time to get off a desperation heave before the buzzer.
IPFW outscored the Mavericks, 42-30, in the paint. Omaha lost despite holding a 39-27 edge in the rebounding battle.
