GAME NOTES: The Nebraska Omaha Mavericks will try to put an end to their current four-game skid against Summit League foes when they take on the IUPUI Jaguars, in a conference bout at Ralston Arena.
IUPUI has dropped two games in a row and 11 of its last 12 games overall. The Jaguars have struggled to a 1-11 conference record this season, which was made worse with an 84-60 beatdown by IUPU-Fort Wayne on Saturday.
Nebraska Omaha is experiencing a four-game slide, but the team had won three games in a row prior to the losing streak. The Mavericks were downed by Denver, 72-60, in the last outing on Saturday, which dropped them to 4-8 in the Summit League standings.
Nebraska Omaha has won the only three games in the short all-time series between the two programs. The Mavericks joined the Summit League prior to last season, and won the earlier matchup this year, 99-71, in Indianapolis.
IUPUI found itself down to intrastate and conference rival IPFW by 11 points as the teams broke for halftime. It was the same story for the Jaguars in the second half, as IPFW continued to pile onto its already double-digit lead. Marcellus Barksdale netted 13 points to pace the Jaguars, while Khufu Najee and Donovan Gibbs each chipped in 11 points. IUPUI grabbed just 21 rebounds as a team, and dished out just eight total assists.
The Jaguars' leading scorer, Ian Chiles, didn't start the game against the Mastodons, and played just 21 minutes going 0-of-6 shooting from the field. He had just two points in the contest, but still averages a team-best 15.2 ppg this season on 40.8 percent shooting. Mitch Patton checks in at second in scoring with 12.7 ppg with a team-leading 28 blocked shots. Najee is third at 10.2 ppg. Barksdale leads the squad in rebounding with a 6.5 rpg average, adding 33 steals to his resume. Barksdale is the team's leading assist man as well, notching 107 helpers on the year.
Nebraska Omaha played its final road game of the regular season on Saturday, losing to Denver. The Mavericks were unable to keep the Pioneers from scoring, as four Denver players recorded points totals in the double digits. C.J. Carter was Omaha's leading scorer with 12 points, and Mike Rostampour added 10 of his own, narrowly missing a double-double with nine rebounds. The Mavericks shot just 34.4 percent from the floor in the loss, and 20 percent from 3-point range.
Carter leads the Mavericks in scoring this season with a 13.7 ppg average and a team-best 95 total assists. Center John Karhoff is second in scoring by a slim margin at 13.1 ppg. Devin Patterson adds 10.3 ppg, and Justin Simmons scores 10 ppg. Rostampour leads the team in rebounding with 6.7 rpg, and Matt Hagerbaumer tops the team in blocked shots with 30.
Nebraska Omaha has had IUPUI's number in the three previous games in this series. But in terms of this season, it's been one struggle after another for the Jaguars, who give up over 73 ppg to their opponents. In Omaha, the Mavericks shouldn't have much trouble picking up a win.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Nebraska Omaha 78, IUPUI 65
