Omaha, NE (SportsNetwork.com) - C.J. Carter finished with 18 points and five assists as the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks downed the South Dakota Coyotes, 77-73, in a Summit League matchup at Ralston Arena.
Justin Simmons added 16 points to help the Mavericks (12-8, 2-3 Summit) pick up their second victory in three outings. Mike Rostampour scored 10 points and came up one rebound shy of a double-double while Marcus Tyus provided a spark off the bench with 12 points.
Trevor Gruis paced South Dakota (8-11, 3-2) with 16 points. Brandon Bos netted 14 points, Tyler Larson scored 13 and Adam Thoseby chipped in 11 points in 31 minutes off the bench.
The Coyotes took a 32-27 lead into the intermission after they connected on 42.3 percent of their shots from the floor and 9-of-11 attempts at the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes of the contest. Omaha fell behind after it missed all six of its tries from 3-point range in the first half.
The Mavericks heated up after the break and shot 59.3 percent from the field including a 7-of-12 clip from beyond the arc. South Dakota hit on 52.2 percent of its field goal attempts and converted 15-of-16 at the free-throw line in the second period, but it sank just two shots from beyond the arc. The contest was tied at 68 with 3:21 before Simmons gave Omaha a lasting lead with a made 3-pointer just under a minute later.
The Mavericks tallied 15 fast break points compared to only six by USD.
