Troy names Cunningham new men's basketball coach
Troy, AL (Sports Network) - Troy University has named Phil Cunningham its new men's basketball coach.
Cunningham spent the 2012-13 season as an assistant at Western Kentucky after holding previous assistant coaching jobs at Mississippi State, Georgia State and James Madison since 1995.
"It's a tremendous honor and privilege for me to be named the new men's basketball head coach at Troy University," said Cunningham at a Tuesday news conference.
Troy needed a replacement for Don Maestri, who announced his retirement after the Trojans were eliminated from Sun Belt Conference Tournament earlier this month. Maestri led the program for 31 years, guiding the Trojans to 500 wins and the transition from Division II to Division I.
"Don Maestri is as humble as someone gets. I have great respect for what Coach Maestri did here," Cunningham added.
Cunningham spent 12 years as an assistant at Mississippi State before heading to Western Kentucky this past season. He also spent five seasons as an assistant under Lefty Driesell at James Madison and Georgia State.
While at Georgia State, Cunningham worked with current Troy athletic director John Hartwell, then an associate AD.
Prior to his 18 years as a Division I assistant, Cunningham was the head coach for three seasons at NAIA Sue Bennett College in Kentucky. He guided that program, transitioning from junior college status to NAIA, to 48 wins.
