Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Donnell Minton made six free throws down the stretch to help Lamar secure its first win of the season, an 86-82 decision over IUPUI in a consolation game of the NIT Season Tip-Off.
Lamar (1-4) trailed by nine with 5 1/2 minutes remaining before rallying with a 13-2 run over a three-minute span for a 76-74 lead. Keilan Blanks and Matt Hancock ignited the Cardinals' surge by hitting consecutive 3-pointers and Donley Minor capped it with back-to-back layups.
John Hart swished a 3 to trim the Jaguars' deficit to 84-82 with 13 seconds remaining. Hart then fouled Rhon Mitchell, who missed the front end of a 1- and-1.
Donovan Gibbs grabbed the rebound, giving IUPUI a chance to tie or possibly win the game in the waning moments. Coming out of a timeout, Greg Rice missed a jumper and Minton cemented the win at the foul line.
Minor led six Cardinals players in double figures with 22 points, while Stan Brown matched Blanks with 12. Minton, Mitchell and Amos Wilson each supplied 10.
Mitchell Patton scored a game-high 27 points for IUPUI (2-4). Hart was the only other Jaguars player to score more than nine, finishing with 20.
