DeShields lifts UNC over Duke

Durham, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Diamond DeShields led with a career-high 30 points as No. 17 North Carolina defeated No. 3 Duke, 89-78, at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

DeShields shot 5-of-11 from beyond the arc and Allisha Gray supplied 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Tar Heels (18-6, 6-4 ACC), who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Xylina McDaniel added 17 points and five rebounds as UNC defeated Duke for the first time in eight games. It was also the first win for the Tar Heels at Cameron Indoor Stadium since Feb. 4, 2008.

Elizabeth Williams paced the Blue Devils (22-3, 9-2) with 28 points and seven boards. Tricia Liston scored 20 points for Duke, losers in two of its last three.

Gray and McDaniel made back-to-back triples for the Tar Heels at the start of a 10-2 run to open the game. Duke clawed back to get within one, 21-20, on a jumper courtesy of Oderah Chidom halfway through the first half.

Trailing 45-36 at the half, Duke came out with an early 11-point spurt. Liston's jumper got the Tar Heels within a single point again nearly three minutes in.

Duke stayed in it as Liston's pair of free throws made it 63-61, but UNC countered with a DeShields three and a 3-point play from Gray with less than eight to go. DeShields' turn-around jumper gave the Tar Heels a 79-70 lead with a little over three to go. North Carolina's lead swelled to 13 in the final minutes.
