Montoya moving over to IndyCar in 2014

Mooresville, NC (Sports Network) - Juan Pablo Montoya is leaving NASCAR at the end of this season and returning to the IndyCar Series to drive for Team Penske in 2014.

Montoya, 37, will drive the No. 2 car for Penske full-time and team with Will Power and Helio Castroneves, who is the current points leader in IndyCar. Last month, Montoya announced that he will not be back with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing in the Sprint Cup Series next year. He has driven for team owner Chip Ganassi since his departure from Formula One at the end of the 2006 season.

"I am really excited to join this legendary team beginning next year," Montoya said in a team statement. "I have had the opportunity to drive for some of the best racing teams in the world, and I have always admired (team owner) Roger Penske and his organization. I consider it an honor to be offered the opportunity to drive for Team Penske."

Montoya is the only driver who has won the Indianapolis 500, the Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 Hours of Daytona. The Colombian has 11 victories in open-wheel racing, including the Indy 500 in 2000. He also captured the CART championship during his rookie season in that series in 1999. Montoya competed in F1 from 2001-06, driving for Williams and McLaren. He scored seven wins, including the 2003 Monaco GP, and 30 podium finishes.

In Sprint Cup, Montoya has recorded two wins (Sonoma, Calif. in 2007 and Watkins Glen, N.Y. in 2010), 24 top-five finishes, 57 top-10s and nine poles in 244 starts. He made the championship Chase in 2009. Montoya is presently 20th in the point standings.

"Juan is a proven winner at all levels of motorsport," Penske said. "He has won a lot of races and championships, and he has an extremely passionate fan base. We look forward to building on his successes together, and we believe he will be a great addition to Team Penske."

Kyle Larson, a rookie in the Nationwide Series this season, will replace Montoya in the No. 42 car for EGR in Sprint Cup next year.
