Defoe does it again as TFC tops DCU

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - A second-half goal from Jermain Defoe was enough as Toronto FC held off D.C. United for a 1-0 win at BMO Field on Saturday, marking the first time that TFC has started a season with back-to- back wins.

After scoring both goals for Toronto in the team's 2-1 season-opening victory at Seattle last weekend, Defoe was once again the difference maker as he collected a failed clearance inside the penalty area on the hour mark and dispatched the ball past goalkeeper Bill Hamid.

While Toronto is off to its best start in club history, United has lost its first two games this season and has yet to score a goal.

The home team had the better of the play in the first half and would have gone in front if not for the play of Hamid.

Defoe was tough to handle for the United back line and he forced a great save from Hamid midway through the first half.

The former Tottenham striker then came even closer as he stabbed a low cross past Hamid but saw his effort strike the post.

It wasn't until the 60th minute that Defoe separated the teams, but it came with a bit of good fortune as Gilberto's shot was parried by Hamid. United defender Bobby Boswell attempted to clear the ball, yet it went straight to Defoe and he hammered home the winner.
