America to face Cruz Azul for Mexican title
Mexico City, Mexico (Sports Network) - America and Cruz Azul will battle for the Mexican Clausura title as both sides emerged from their respective semifinals over the weekend.
America had a much tougher time in getting past Monterrey, 4-3, on aggregate, while Cruz Azul coasted to a 5-1 aggregate victory against Santos.
After a 2-2 first leg in Monterrey, America had to wait until the 64th minute for the breakthrough as Raul Jimenez converted from the penalty spot.
Cristian Benitez made it 2-0 on the evening with his goal in the 83rd, while the only reply from Monterrey came in stoppage time through Aldo De Nigris.
Cruz Azul had already taken a big step toward reaching the final with a 3-0 first leg victory at Santos during the week, so Sunday's match left little drama for the home side.
Javier Penuelas sucked even more of the life out of Santos as he scored two goals in the opening 25 minutes to make it 5-0 to Cruz Azul on aggregate.
Andres Renteria pulled a goal back in the 37th for Santos, but the frustrations of the club became evident in the second half as both Carlos Quintero and Felipe Baloy were sent off six minutes apart for the visitors.
