Gomez nets brace as Santos takes over top spot
Mexico City, Mexico (Sports Network) - Hercules Gomez scored a pair of goals in the second half to help Santos claim a 3-1 win over Puebla and move to the top of the Mexican Clausura on Saturday.
DaMarcus Beasley put Puebla into the lead shortly before halftime, but Gomez leveled the match a few minutes after the break for Santos, with Oribe Peralta scoring the go-ahead goal 20 minutes from time.
Gomez sealed the win in the 90th minute with his second goal of the contest, sending Santos to the top of the league on goal difference.
Morelia slipped to second place after falling 2-1 at home against Toluca on Friday in a match that saw the hosts go behind by two goals inside of 20 minutes.
Friday's other contest ended in a 1-1 draw between Tijuana and America despite the fact that Tijuana had a player sent off after six minutes and finished the game with nine men.
Two goals in the second half from Luis Rey allowed Jaguares to grab a 2-2 draw with Tigres on Saturday, Monterrey claimed a 4-1 victory against Queretaro with Jesus De Nigris tallying two goals, Hector Reynoso Lopez scored a stoppage-time penalty kick to hand Guadalajara a 2-1 win over Cruz Azul, while San Luis and Pachuca finished in a 0-0 draw, as did Atlante and Atlas.
The lone match on Sunday also failed to produce a goal as UNAM and U.A.G. ended scoreless.
