Santos downs Tijuana to take Clausura lead
Tijuana, Mexico (Sports Network) - Cristian Suarez and Juan Rodriguez scored in the second half as Santos downed Tijuana, 3-1, on Sunday to move into sole possession of first place in Mexico's Clausura.
Santos entered the week level on points with Tijuana and Toluca, and picked up a huge early-season road win as Suarez scored in the 65th minute to snap a 1-1 tie and Rodriguez added the clincher in the 89th.
Toluca also lost this weekend, losing 1-0 to Atlas on Saturday on a Giancarlos Maldonado goal, as Santos emerged alone atop the table on 10 points after four matches. Toluca is third, while Tijuana slipped to sixth.
Cristian Benitez scored two goals Saturday as America won at San Luis, 3-1, to climb to second, Atlante needed goals from Osvaldo Martinez and Juan Cuevas to move into fourth after a 2-2 draw with Cruz Azul, and Alan Pulido and Jose Rivas scored as Apertura champion Tigres edged U.A.G., 2-1, to claim fifth.
Guadalajara notched its first point of the season with a 0-0 draw against UNAM on Sunday, American DeMarcus Beasley scored as Puebla downed Jaguares 1-0 and Pachuca and Queretaro finished 1-1 in Saturday's other games, while Morelia and Monterrey tied 0-0 on Friday to open the week's action.
