Nobody asked me, but...
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - There's nothing like a summer quiz to jog the memory while also eliciting plenty of groans from the classroom.

We'll start out easy, because we like you, and then we'll crank things up a bit to see how much attention you were really paying.

OK, let's get everybody started on the right foot:

1. What event took place last summer that saw the U.S. of A. do extremely well? Was it:

A. The World Cup (read on after you stop chuckling)
B. The Stanley Cup Finals
C. The Summer Olympics
D. None of the above

See, I told you the first question would be a cinch. We won't even bother with giving the answer.

2. The United State won how many gold medals at the London Olympics in 2012? (See, I told you things would get tough in a hurry):

A, 46
B. 51
C. 41
D. 14

If you answered A, 46 gold medals, you not only have a good memory, but you're also a good guesser.

3. OK, we've gone pretty general, now let's get a little more specific. We all know Michael Phelps was the star of the 2012 Summer Games (more on him later), but of these athletes, who also brought home some gold from London?

A. Peyton Manning
B. Lance Armstrong
C. Serena Williams
D. Daffy Duck

Nice job if you went with Serena Williams. And not only did Serena win the women's singles tennis gold medal, but she also paired up with her sister Venus to win the doubles gold, too. That's pretty good stuff.

4. OK, who did women's beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh Jennings team up with to win the gold medal? (a hint, this pairing won Olympic gold together in 2004, 2008 and last year).

A. Serena Williams
B. Misty May-Treanor
C. Beyonce
D. Missy Franklin

Bingo, it's B, Misty May-Treanor. May-Treanor, by the way, has retired from the sport. And, if you knew that Walsh Jennings is now playing with April Ross, one of Walsh Jennings/May-Treanor's opponents in last summer's gold medal final, you really do know a lot about women's beach volleyball.

5. Now that you think you're rolling, let's get really hard, shall we? Name the only American freestyle wrestler to win a gold medal in London. Was it?

A. Dan Gable
B. Kyle Dake
C. Jordan Burroughs
E. Ric Flair

It was B, Burroughs, and if you knew that, bravo. And the best thing about Burroughs? He plans to wrestle for the United States in the 2016 Games, too.

6. Michael Phelps (I told you we'd get back to Phelps - any Olympic talk naturally does) won four gold medals and two silvers in London and is the most decorated athlete in Olympic history with 22 total medals (18 gold, two silver, two bronze). Name the American female swimmers who both won five medals?

A. Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney
B. Laverne and Shirley
C. Missy Franklin and Allison Schmitt
D. Dana Vollmer and Rebecca Soni

Boom. It's C, Franklin and Schmitt. Franklin won four golds and a bronze while Schmitt won three golds, a silver and a bronze. Douglas and Maroney were star gymnasts, and Vollmer and Soni combined to win six swimming medals (five golds and a silver), which isn't too bad at all. As for Laverne and Shirley, it was a pretty good sitcom a long time ago.

7. And the final bonus question: When will the next Winter Olympics be held?

A. Early in 2014
B. The summer of 2016
C. They still have the Winter Olympics?
D. Next weekend

The answer, duh, is A. We'll soon have lugers and ice skaters and real live NHL players.

I don't know, call me a traditionalist, or call me a curmudgeon, but I liked it more when the Winter and Summer Olympics were held in the same year. It just gave us more to look forward to, in at least one man's opinion.

Think they'll change it back to the old way? I won't hold my breath.
