Olympic champion Soni retires from competitive swimming

(SportsNetwork.com) - Olympic champion Rebecca Soni has announced her retirement from competitive swimming.

Soni won three Olympic medals at the 2012 Games in London after also winning three medals four years earlier in Beijing. She captured gold in the 200-meter breaststroke at each Olympics, becoming the first woman to break 2 minutes and 20 seconds in the event at the London Games.

"After London, I already had the feeling that I might be done," Soni wrote on her new company website, Atlas Ventures. "Achieving my dream of going below 2:20 in the 200 breast really was a storybook end to it. I feel like I conquered something I had been chasing for so long ... for almost 10 years! And now it's time to conquer something else."

Soni won a silver medal at the 2008 Games in the 100-meter breaststroke and the 4x100-meter medley relay. She captured silver in the 100-meter breaststroke again in 2012 and was part of the U.S. gold medal effort in the 4x100-meter medley relay.
