London, England (Sports Network) - China's men's table tennis team opened up defense of its gold medal Saturday with a victory, while the women cruised into the semifinals in their draw.
China bested Germany to win the gold at the 2008 Beijing Games and this year's edition of the team contains recent singles gold and silver medal winners Zhang Jike and Wang Hao, respectively. Wang was also part of the Beijing team and helped his team roll past Russia 3-1 and into the quarterfinals.
Next up for China will be Singapore, which bested Australia in its first-round matchup.
In an interesting matchup, South Korea got the better of North Korea 3-1 in its first-round meeting. South Korea draws Portugal in the quarters after the latter bested host Great Britain.
Also advancing on Saturday were Austria, Germany, Japan and Hong Kong.
On the women's side, China and South Korea will face each other in the semifinals on Monday after 3-0 victories over Netherlands and Hong Kong, respectively.
The other bracket pits Singapore -- 2008 Beijing silver medalist -- versus Japan on Sunday.
