The eight from Russia scored 49.5 on their technical routine to lead Spain by .583 points heading into Saturday's free routine.
China is third, .916 points behind, while Japan is fourth, followed by Canada and the United States in a tie for fifth, 1.916 points off the pace.
Russia is chasing its third straight team Olympic gold and they're likely to accomplish the feat, especially with Davydova and Ermakova winning gold in the duet event on Wednesday.
