Sprinter Nellum to carry U.S. flag at closing ceremony

London, England (Sports Network) - Sprinter Bryshon Nellum, told by doctors four years ago that he would never run competitively again after being shot in both legs, has been chosen to carry the United States flag at Sunday's closing ceremony.

Nellum was selected by fellow U.S. team members at the London Olympics. The U.S. Olympic Committee made the announcement Friday night, after Nellum ran leadoff in the silver medal-winning men's 1,600-meter relay.

"I'm humbled by this incredible privilege," Nellum said. "Four years ago I wasn't sure I'd ever run again, and now I'm leading Team USA into the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. I'm so grateful for the incredible support of my friends and family and I'll never forget these games."

USOC chief executive Scott Blackmun congratulated Nellum, saying: "His courage embodies the Olympic spirit and he'll represent our team well on Sunday night."
