London, England (Sports Network) - Defending gold medalists France opened up men's handball Group A play on Sunday with a 44-15 victory against Great Britain at the Copper Box.
France got 11 goals out of Guillaume Joli on his 13 shots, while Jerome Fernandez scored nine goals.
Great Britain, playing its first ever men's handball match in the Olympic Games, was paced by Robin Garnham's six goals.
Group A member Iceland, which won the silver four years ago, knocked off Argentina on Sunday, while Spain handed Serbia a 26-21 defeat. The Spanish, part of Group B, won bronze four years ago in Beijing.
Also, Croatia bested Korea 31-21 in Group B play, three-time Olympic silver medalist Sweden -- back in the Olympic Games following a 12-year absence -- scored a 28-21 triumph over fellow Group A team Tunisia and Denmark topped Hungary 27-25.
