U.S. drops field hockey opener against Germany

London, England (Sports Network) - The United States women lost their opening game of the Olympic field hockey tournament on Sunday, losing 2-1 to Germany in Group B action at Riverbank Arena.

The Germans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half before Lauren Crandall got the U.S. on the board in the second half. Next up for the Americans is Tuesday's contest against South Africa, which lost 7-1 to Argentina on Sunday in a game that tied the Olympic record for largest margin of victory in women's field hockey.

In other Group B action, New Zealand beat Australia, 1-0, while defending gold medalists Netherlands began Group A play with a 3-0 win over Belgium. Also in Group A, China defeated South Korea, 4-0, and Great Britain topped Japan by the same score.
