Beijing, China (Sports Network) - The Netherlands won its first field hockey gold medal in 24 years on Friday with a 2-0 victory over China in the women's final.
Naomi van As and Maartje Goderie scored second-half goals to break a scoreless tie and lead their country to the gold medal for the first time since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
The Netherlands had lost to Germany in the gold medal match at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
China, playing in its first Olympic final, claimed silver for a good showing.
In the bronze medal match, 2004 silver medalist Argentina beat the reigning Olympic champion Germans by a 3-1 score to make the medal podium again.
Also on Friday, Russia defeated New Zealand to clinch 11th place and relegate the Kiwis to last, while Australia edged Great Britain by a 2-0 score to win fifth place.
The United States ended the tournament in eighth place.
