Reigning gold medalist ousted in table tennis

Beijing, China (Sports Network) - Reigning table tennis gold medalist Ryu Seung Min was ousted from the men's singles competition at Beijing Olympics on Thursday in a third-round loss to Ko Lai Chak.

Ko defeated Ryu 4-2 to knock the medal favorite from the singles draw, making the path of other favorites a little easier.

Top-ranked player Wang Hao, the No. 1 seed and defending silver medalist, led the way for the host Chinese, joining No. 2 seed Ma Lin and No. 3 seed Wang Liqin in moving on to the quarterfinals.

On the women's side, United States medal hopefuls Gao Jun and Wang Chen were both ousted from the tournament. Gao lost a seven-set thriller to Wu Xue of the Dominican Republic, while Wang moved all the way to the quarterfinals before losing in five sets to Li Jia Wei of Singapore.
