Beijing, China (Sports Network) - Zhang Ning became the first player in Olympic badminton history to win two straight singles titles when she topped Chinese teammate and world No.1 Xie Xingfang on Saturday.
The 33-year-old Zhang won by scores of 21-12, 10-21, 21-18 in 71 minutes.
"When Xie Xingfang fought back in the third game, I thought it might be too hard to win," said Zhang. "After the previous four matches in the competition I have been very exhausted and today I felt tired."
Zhang also called it the "perfect ending to my badminton career."
China was prevented from a medals sweep in the event as Indonesia's Maria Kristin Yulianti came back to beat Lu Lan, 11-21, 21-13, 21-15, for the bronze.
