Description: Flyers coach Peter Laviolette announced that Michael Leighton was put on the injured reserve.
Insight: Ilya Bryzgalov will be backed up by Brian Boucher. Don't expect to see Boucher on the ice very often.

1/27/2013 4:08:00 PM
Description: Flyers coach Peter Laviolette announced that Michael Leighton will start in net Sunday against Tampa Bay.
Insight: Ilya Bryzgalov started the first five games for Philadelphia, including Saturday against the Panthers. Leighton hasn't played in the NHL since 2010-11, when he made one start for the Flyers.

Description: Michael Leighton was pulled after the first period in Game 6 against Buffalo after he allowed three goals on eight shots. Yahoo Sports
Insight: Flyers coach Peter Laviolette seemed to be asking a little too much by expecting Leighton to channel Bernie Parent. Leighton has played in a grand total of one other game this season, so he clearly didn't look ready for this situation. Brian Boucher took over between the pipes to start the second period.

Description: Michael Leighton is the Flyers' starting goalie for Game 6 against Buffalo on Sunday. Globe & Mail
Insight: The Flyers are going with their third starting goalie of this series, which on the surface seems like a knee-jerk reaction for a team that is supposed to contend for the Stanley Cup. Brian Boucher is dressed as the backup and would no doubt be pressed into duty at a moment's notice should Leighton falter. At least Leighton has the big-game experience, as he led the Flyers to the finals last season.

Description: Michael Leighton has cleared re-entry waivers. TSN
Insight: Leighton will now be allowed to report to the Flyers, giving them another goaltending option heading into the playoffs. He was an unlikely star during last year's playoffs in helping lead the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals. What may have detracted teams from claiming him was the fact that he would not be able to play for the claiming team during the regular season or the playoffs.

Description: The Philadelphia Flyers have placed Michael Leighton on re-entry waivers in an attempt to recall him from the AHL. Philadelphia Inquirer
Insight: Neither Sergei Bobrovsky nor Brian Boucher is injured, so the Flyers are recalling Leighton just to have a third goaltender ready for the playoffs. Since Leighton earns only $1.55 million per season, there is a good chance that another team will reclaim him as a backup goalie for the playoffs while only paying him half that salary.

Description: Michael Leighton has cleared waivers and will be sent to the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL. Philadelphia Inquirer
Insight: It's unfortunate that a Stanley Cup playoff hero gets to be rewarded this way, but the Flyers' revolving door of goalies will continue. If Leighton is recalled from the AHL, he will have to pass through re-entry waivers, where it is much more likely that another team will claim him at half the price.

1/3/2011 1:51:00 PM
Description: The Philadelphia Flyers have placed goalie Michael Leighton on waivers. Delaware County Daily Times
Insight: Leighton was instrumental in the Flyers' run to the Stanley Cup Finals last season, but he was held to just one game after offseason knee surgery. Leighton may end up in the AHL if he is not claimed, so the Flyers appear to be going with veteran Brian Boucher and rookie Sergei Bobrovsky for the time being.

12/30/2010 1:03:00 PM
Description: According to the Philadelphia Daily News, a source close to the Flyers said that Michael Leighton will make his season debut on Thursday against Los Angeles. Philadelphia Daily News
Insight: Flyers coach Peter Laviolette would not confirm or deny the rumor, although he doesn't easily reveal starting goalie information. Brian Boucher and Sergei Bobrovsky teamed up to allow six goals to the Canucks on Tuesday, so this would be a perfect time to get Leighton back into the fold. The Flyers' already confusing goaltending situation is only going to get even more difficult to figure out.

12/14/2010 7:28:00 PM
Description: Flyers GM Paul Holmgren said that Michael Leighton will be activated during Tuesday's game or right after it. NHL.com
Insight: Once Leighton returns to the Flyers' lineup, their goaltending situation will become tricky. Brian Boucher has started the last two games and is starting again Tuesday, although the Flyers could be giving him showcase starts in an attempt to trade him before he would be sent to the AHL. Leighton's return could also affect the number of starts received by rookie sensation Sergei Bobrovsky.

11/30/2010 3:49:00 PM
Description: Michael Leighton has been sent to the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL for a six-day rehabilitation stint. Philadelphia Inquirer
Insight: It will be interesting to see how the Flyers' goaltending situation plays out when Leighton returns, as rookie Sergei Bobrovsky has made the most of his opportunity (12-3-2, 2.19 GAA, .926 SV%). However, is it fair for Leighton to lose his starting job because of injury? Leighton's return will make Brian Boucher obsolete, if he isn't already.

11/17/2010 1:12:00 PM
Description: Michael Leighton has been cleared by doctors to resume all on-ice activities. Philadelphia Inquirer
Insight: There is still no timetable for Leighton's return, and he will need considerable time to work himself back into game shape. Sergei Bobrovsky has made the most of his opportunity to start, but he will likely lose some starts once the playoff hero from last season returns. Brian Boucher, who hasn't played much recently, would likely be sent back to the AHL when Leighton returns.

10/8/2010 5:15:00 PM
Description: Michael Leighton will be sidelined for the next six to eight weeks because of back surgery. TSN
Insight: Keep Leighton on IR if you can, as he will likely be the Flyers' starting goalie when he returns. Sergei Bobrovsky or Brian Boucher should start for the Flyers in the meantime, depending on which way the cookie crumbles.

10/7/2010 10:41:00 AM
Description: The Philadelphia Flyers are expected to place Michael Leighton on long-term injury reserve. Philadelphia Inquirer
Insight: Being kept on long-term injury reserve means that Leighton will miss a minimum of ten games. Brian Boucher and Sergei Bobrovsky should handle the goaltending duties while Leighton is out. See how this situation plays out in the short term.

9/28/2010 12:54:00 PM
Description: Michael Leighton will be sidelined for one month with a bulging disc in his back. TSN
Insight: Veteran Brian Boucher and youngster Johan Backlund could take care of the Flyers' goaltending while Leighton is out, although prospect Sergei Bobrovsky could factor into the mix. Don't be surprised to see the Flyers make a play for a veteran netminder, either in the short term or the long term.

9/25/2010 5:43:00 PM
Description: Michael Leighton was forced to leave Friday's preseason game against Toronto just before the shootout because of a back injury. Philadelphia Inquirer
Insight: Expect the Flyers to take it easy with Leighton for the remainder of the preseason. The Flyers, who seem to be snakebitten when it comes to goalies, would use Brian Boucher and prospect Sergei Bobrovsky if Leighton isn't ready for the start of the season.
