NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Philadelphia
(Saturday, January 28th)
Final Score: Tampa Bay 6, Philadelphia 0
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Fredrik Modin recorded a hat trick and Sean Burke stopped each of the 38 shots he faced to lead Tampa Bay past the Philadelphia Flyers, 6-0, at the Wachovia Center.
Ryan Craig had a goal and an assist while Martin St. Louis donated two helpers for the Lightning, who have won five of their last six games.
Rookie netminder Antero Niittymaki allowed six goals on 30 shots for Philadelphia, which has lost two in a row and six of its last eight.
The Flyers were again skating without center Peter Forsberg, who had to leave Wednesday's game against Montreal with a groin injury and has been periodically hampered by various ailments throughout the season. He is expected to be out for at least another week.
The Lightning scored a pair of goals late in the opening period to assume a 2-0 lead.
The first tally came at the 14:47 mark, as Dan Boyle gathered a rebound in front and flipped a backhander into the back of the net stick side.
Just 2:10 later, Tampa Bay cashed in on a power-play chance via Modin's deflection goal with Darryl Sydor picking up the assist.
Sydor was hit in the face by a Flyers' shot early in the second stanza, and laid bleeding on the ice for several minutes before being assisted to the locker room. He did not return.
The Lightning kept the Flyers off the board in the second despite being without one of their top defenders, however, and added another goal to make it 3-0. Modin picked up his second power-play marker of the afternoon with 8:57 to play in the stanza, as he redirected Pavel Kubina's wrister from the point through Niittymaki's five-hole.
Modin picked up the hat trick 7:01 into the third, as he finished off a give- and-go with St. Louis on a point-blank shot from the slot to seal Philadelphia's fate.
Vaclav Prospal and Craig then scored within 14 seconds of one another midway through the final frame to cap the scoring.
Flyers defenseman Kim Johnsson (dizziness) did not play in the third period...Tampa Bay has taken all three encounters with the Flyers this season and has won seven straight and eight of the last nine regular-season meetings. The Lightning have won five straight in Philadelphia...This was a rematch of the 2004 Eastern Conference finals when the Lightning won in seven games over the Flyers before hoisting the franchise's first-ever Stanley Cup...The Flyers have 68 points and still lead the Atlantic Division.
