NHL Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Philadelphia

(Monday, January 23rd)

Final Score: Philadelphia 4, Pittsburgh 2

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Mike Knuble scored the eventual game- winner with 2:05 remaining and tallied an assist in the first period as the Philadelphia Flyers downed Pittsburgh, 4-2, in the back end of a home-and-home at the Wachovia Center.

Antero Niittymaki turned away 24 shots and Petr Nedved registered his first goal for Philadelphia, which won the first installment at Pittsburgh on Saturday, 2-1.

Nedved, a 14-year veteran, was traded from Phoenix on Friday in exchange for defenseman Dennis Seidenberg and appeared in his second game as a Flyer.

Michel Ouellet had a goal and an assist and Mark Recchi also scored for Pittsburgh, which has lost a season-high 10 straight. Netminder Marc-Andre Fleury recorded 32 saves.

The Penguins evened the game at 2-2 with 7:42 left in the game while skating with the man advantage. Sidney Crosby held the puck inside the right circle and then whipped a pass into the left slot for Ouellet, who punched it home.

Knuble, though, answered with his 22nd tally of the season in the final minutes to put Philadelphia on top for good. Peter Forsberg won a draw in the Penguins zone and kicked it back to Derian Hatcher, who sent in a shot from the point that was redirected by Knuble before fluttering past Fleury.

Pittsburgh's final surge failed to produce a goal and Simon Gagne then sent the puck the length of the ice for an empty-netter with five seconds left to secure the win.

The Flyers struck with 45 seconds remaining in the opening period to assume a 1-0 lead. Defenseman Frederick Meyer sent a wrister from the point that hit off of Knuble in front before trickling through the pads of Fleury. Michal Handzus spotted the loose puck in the crease and punched it into the open net for the goal.

Nedved then got his third goal of the season at the 5:07 mark of the second period. With the Flyers skating on the power play, Mike Rathje blasted a shot from the high slot that missed the net wide right but caromed off the back wall and back out front for Nedved, who quickly snapped it into the cage.

Pittsburgh cut its deficit in half with 5:58 to play in the stanza, as Robert Scuderi's shot from the top of the right circle was deflected by Recchi before slipping past Niittymaki stick side.

Game Notes

Gagne tied a career-high for goals with the empty-netter (33)...Nedved's last goal was on October 25 against St. Louis...The Penguins are 0-25-6 when trailing after two periods...Forsberg had missed two straight games due to a groin/abdominal injury.
