NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Florida

(Monday, December 26th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 3, Florida 2 (SO)

Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Ben Eager scored the first two goals of his NHL career and Michal Handzus was the only player to score in the shootout as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Florida Panthers, 3-2, at the BankAtlantic Center.

Jeff Carter had two assists and Antero Niittymaki made 34 saves for the Flyers, who have won three straight and four of their last five contests.

Mike Van Ryn and Chris Gratton both scored goals and Roberto Luongo stopped 42 shots for Florida, which has lost two straight.

After the first three shooters on each team failed to get one past either netminder, Handzus beat Luongo with a backhand shot top shelf to put the Flyers ahead.

Jozef Stumpel had a chance to force a fifth set of shooters but, after he clearly beat Niittymaki, the puck inexplicably bounced over his stick and fluttered harmlessly away.

Florida got on the scoreboard 5:16 into the second period after Van Ryn threw a shot on goal from the right circle that deflected off of Philadelphia defenseman Mike Rathje in front and past Niittymaki for the 1-0 lead.

The Flyers tied the game with 40.2 seconds left in the second period after Eager gathered a rebound in the slot and threw a shot on goal that deflected off of Luongo's stick and in to make it 1-1.

The Panthers regained the lead 4:31 into the third period after Gratton deflected a wrap-around shot from on the doorstep past Niittymaki to make it 2-1.

Philadelphia netted the equalizer just over two minutes later after Eager one- timed a rebound into a wide-open net to make it 2-2. Carter blasted a slap shot from below the right circle that was saved by Luongo, but the rebound kicked out to Eager at the side of the left circle for the easy goal.
