NHL Game Summary - Edmonton at San Jose
(Thursday, January 19th)
Final Score: Edmonton 3, San Jose 2 (SO)
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Ryan Smyth, who beat San Jose with a shootout goal on November 21, slapped a backhand top shelf past Vesa Toskala for the game-winning tally, as Edmonton claimed a 3-2 shootout victory over San Jose at HP Pavilion.
Shawn Horcoff and Steve Staios lit the lamp in regulation for Edmonton, which snapped a three-game skid and is unbeaten (3-0-1) in the last four meetings between the clubs. Michael Morrison made 27 saves, including several clutch saves in overtime.
Joe Thornton scored his 16th goal of the season and Milan Michalek also scored for San Jose, which has lost two of its last three contests. Toskala saved 27 of 29 shots on goal and had his personal five-game winning streak halted.
"It was looking for awhile like the way the game started that we weren't going to get anything and once we battled back it's hard in a game like that to keep your foot on the gas without risking anything and I think in the future we've got to keep on pushing," Sharks head coach Ron Wilson said.
Edmonton didn't completely squander its early two-goal advantage, as it was deja vu for Smyth in the shootout.
With the shootout tied at 1-1, Smyth used his backhand to go top shelf to Toskala's glove side to push the Oilers in front 2-1. Morrison denied the final two San Jose opportunities, including a quick glove save on a wrister from Thornton.
"That's what we wanted to do is come in here and get the win," Smyth said. "We know they're right on our tail and they're playing good."
San Jose's rally began during the early stages of the second stanza.
Thornton slapped the puck from right in front of the net past Morrison on the stick side to cut the deficit to 2-1 at 4:17. With the goal, Thornton has four goals and 11 assists in his last 10 games.
San Jose squared the contest at 2-2 with Michalek streaking past an opposing defender for the tally. Along the right boards, Jonathan Cheechoo delivered a perfect pass to Michalek, who used his speed to gain separation from an Edmonton defender then flipped the disc over Morrison's glove at 8:05.
The Sharks spent the final two minutes of overtime with an extra skater courtesy of Michael Peca's hooking penalty, but two point-blank shots were denied by Morrison.
Edmonton got on the scoreboard first with Horcoff's 15th goal of the season. Smyth took a slap shot from above the high slot and Horcoff deflected it past Toskala at 8:21 of the first stanza.
The lead grew to 2-0 as Staios received the puck from Jarret Stoll just beyond the left circle and fired a slapshot past Morrison with 9:04 remaining in the first.
San Jose fell to 13-4-4 at home this season...Edmonton improved to 14-8-3 on the road...Cheechoo extended his point streak to 10 games...San Jose has still won six of its last six games...Attendance was 15,683.
