NHL Game Summary - Edmonton at Minnesota
(Wednesday, November 23rd)
Final Score: Edmonton 4, Minnesota 3
St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Ethan Moreau snapped a tie with 49.6 seconds remaining to give the Edmonton Oilers a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild at Xcel Energy Center.
Jarret Stoll and Raffi Torres each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who have won two straight and four of their last five games. Michael Morrison made 22 saves in the win.
Pascal Dupuis had two goals and an assist and Dwayne Roloson made 24 saves in net for the Wild, who have lost four of their last five games.
The Wild had knotted the game with Dupuis' second goal of the night at the 5:17 mark of the third period.
The Oilers, though, went in front in the final minute on Moreau's fifth goal of the year. A shot by Marty Reasoner from the left circle was blocked by a Wild player in front of the net. Moreau picked up the rebound in the slot and flicked a wrist shot that beat Roloson on the glove side.
"Fernie [Fernando Pisani] and Marty were skating well all game," said Moreau. "They got on the puck so quick and got it back to [Chris] Pronger. Marty was in a good spot in the middle of the ice and I just picked it out and got it on the net."
Minnesota soon pulled its goaltender, but was unable to get the equalizer.
The Oilers got an early goal on a 3-on-1 play. A turnover in the neutral zone resulted in Stoll getting the puck. He brought it into the Wild's end and made a pass from deep in the left circle to Torres at the top of the right circle. His shot deflected of a Minnesota stick and into the net just 2:01 into the contest.
The Wild tied the game with a power-play goal. Randy Robitaille made a pass from the right point to Dupuis down low on the right side of the net. He waited with the puck and got it to Marian Gaborik, who was charging in from the left point. His one-timer beat Morrison at the 6:07 mark
Minnesota took a 2-1 lead with another power-play goal just 3:23 later. Gaborik got a pass off from the left boards as he was being mugged by an Edmonton player. His pass found Pierre-Marc Bouchard in the center of the slot. He faked a shot and sent the puck to the left side of the net for Dupuis, whose backhander went off the inside of the right post and into the net.
However Edmonton tied the game thanks to a faceoff win. Shawn Horcoff won the faceoff and drew it back to Ales Hemsky. He immediately slapped the puck into the right corner of the net with 8:40 left in the first period.
The Oilers took a 3-2 lead with the only goal of the second period. Torres made a pass from the top of the left circle to Stoll at the right circle. His one-timer went into the right corner of the net at the 9:26 mark.
The Wild knotted the game again just 5:17 into the last stanza. The Oilers turned the puck over at the blue line and Robitaille brought it down low on the right side. His centering pass hit Dupuis in the slot and his shot went over Morrison's right shoulder.
"We tied it up in the third and every time you get the momentum in the game you obviously expect to win or at least get a tie out of it," said Dupuis. "We came hard at the end but they scored a big goal."
