NHL Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Philadelphia
(Wednesday, November 16th)
Final Score: Pittsburgh 3, Philadelphia 2 (OT)
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Sidney Crosby scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway with 46.7 seconds remaining in overtime as the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2, at the Wachovia Center.
Crosby had two goals and an assist and Marc-Andre Fleury, who played in place of scheduled starter Jocelyn Thibault, made 45 saves for Pittsburgh, which snapped a two-game skid.
Thibault suffered an undisclosed injury during the pregame warmups and was taken to a Philadelphia-area hospital, forcing Fleury into emergency action.
Joni Pitkanen scored two goals, Peter Forsberg had two assists and Antero Niittymaki stopped 26 of 29 shots for the Flyers, who have lost two straight games for the first time this season.
Ryan Malone, who netted the Pens' first goal, sent Crosby in on the breakaway in overtime. Crosby gathered the puck at center ice, skated in alone on Niittymaki and beat him with a wrist shot stick-side for the game-winner.
After neither team scored over the first two periods, Pittsburgh got on the scoreboard 2:03 into the third period while on the power play after Malone beat Niittymaki with a one-timer from the left circle for the 1-0 lead. Crosby sent a pass from the slot into the right circle to John LeClair, who passed the puck cross ice to Malone for the score.
The Penguins extended their lead to 2-0 just 56 seconds later after Crosby batted home a loose puck in the crease. From the left side of the Flyers' net, Crosby sent a backhand pass between his legs that caromed off Nittymaki and over to Zigmund Palffy on the other side of the net. Palffy flipped the puck back into the crease and off Niittymaki's leg. Crosby knocked home the loose change for his eighth goal of the season.
The Flyers got back within one while on the man advantage with 14:50 left in the third period after Pitkanen one-timed a pass from the left circle through Fleury's five-hole to make it 2-1. Forsberg sent a pass from the high slot to Pitkanen, who was charging in from the point.
Philadelphia netted the equalizer just 1:34 later after Pitkanen scored his second power-play goal of the game. Simon Gagne dropped a pass to the right corner for Forsberg, who sent a cross-ice pass to Pitkanen in the left circle. Pitkanen one-timed it past Fleury to make it a 2-2 game.
