NHL Game Summary - Edmonton at Columbus
(Friday, November 11th)
Final Score: Edmonton 3, Columbus 1
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Fernando Pisani recorded the tie-breaking goal 7:36 into the third-period and Jussi Markannen made 29 saves as Edmonton edged Columbus, 3-1, at Nationwide Arena.
Ryan Smyth assisted on all three Oiler tallies and Shawn Horcroff finished with a pair of helpers to help Edmonton stop a two-game losing streak that followed five consecutive victories.
Former Oiler Todd Marchant had the lone goal for the Blue Jackets, who fell for the fifth time in six outings.
Columbus, the NHL's lowest scoring team, continued to struggle offensively despite owning a 30-21 advantage in shots.
"We've had some bad luck going against us, but that's hockey," said Marchant afterward. "We have to go back to simple hockey by just throwing it at the net and driving at the net. I'm happy with the effort, but not satisfied with the outcome."
With the clubs deadlocked at 1-1, Smyth worked the puck into the offensive zone to Horcroff, who fed an onrushing Pisani in front of the net for a wrister that got past goaltender Marc Denis.
Columbus desperately tried to tie it in the closing minutes but failed to solve Markannen.
Jason Chimera fanned on a rebound attempt of Nikolai Zherdev's shot from the left side with two minutes to go and Markannen would stop Chimera seconds later from close range.
Edmonton sealed the win when Radek Dvorak knocked home an empty-netter after taking in a pass from Smyth with 11 seconds left to play.
The Oilers managed just two shots in the first period but made good on one of them. With less than three minutes elapsed from the opening faceoff, Horcroff dumped the puck along the boards to Smyth, who skated behind the net and found an open Jason Smith from the right point. Smith then one-timed a rocket past Denis to give Edmonton a quick 1-0 lead.
Columbus drew even just past the midway point of the session when Marchant intercepted Marc-Andre Bouchard's pass and tapped in the carom of his initial shot attempt.
The Blue Jackets had four power-play opportunities in the first 20 minutes but failed to convert each one.
Denis ended with 18 saves in the loss.
Bouchard was activated from injured reserve prior to the game after missing three straight contests due to a broken left finger suffered November 3 against Detroit. Goaltender Ty Conklin, who has made just four appearances this season due to a groin injury, was placed on IR to make room...Michael Peca also returned for the Oilers after sitting out the last three games with a concussion...Edmonton hasn't lost in its last 12 meetings (nine wins, three ties) with Columbus and is unbeaten (4-0-3) in seven straight visits to Nationwide Arena...Marchant spent nine-plus seasons (1994-03) with the Oilers before joining the Jackets prior to the 2003-04 campaign.
