NHL Game Summary - Edmonton at Nashville
(Tuesday, November 8th)
Final Score: Nashville 3, Edmonton 2
Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Scott Hartnell got the game-winning goal with 22.5 seconds left in the game as the Nashville Predators defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 3-2, at Gaylord Entertainment Center.
Kimmo Timonen had a goal and an assist for the Predators, who have won for the first time in six games. They were 0-2-3 during that stretch.
Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves in the victory.
Ryan Smyth and Jarret Stoll scored in defeat for the Oilers, who have lost two straight after a five-game winning streak.
Jussi Markkanen had 24 saves for the Oilers.
The score was tied 1-1 late into the third period, but the two teams combined for three goals in the last 1:55 of the game.
Nashville's Jerred Smithson threw a shot from the right point and Markkanen made the save. The rebound went to the front of the net and after a mad scramble, with several players trying to get the puck, the disc popped out to the left circle and Timonen shot it in to give the Predators a 2-1 lead at the 18:05 mark.
"It was a mosh pit in front of the net," said Predators coach Barry Trotz.
Edmonton tied it up just 56 seconds later. A shot from the right point by Jason Smith deflected off of Smyth's stick and through Vokoun's five-hole to tie the game up with 58 seconds left.
"It's hard to hold leads in the new NHL," said Trotz. "I almost had a heart attack."
But Hartnell got the game winner with 22.5 seconds left. Greg Johnson's centering pass hit a Edmonton player's stick and the puck popped up in the air. Hartnell gloved it, put the disc on the ice in front of the net and shot it past Markannen for the game winner.
"This is as tough a loss as we've had this season," said Oilers coach Craig MacTavish.
Neither team was able to score in the first period, despite both having two power plays. The Oilers outshot the Predators 14-8.
The Oilers opened up the scoring at the 9:22 mark of the second period. With Dan Hamhuis in the box for holding, Shawn Horcoff made a pass from the bottom left circle to Stoll. His one-timer went into the top-left corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
The scored remained that way until the Predators tied it up early into the last stanza. Martin Erat took a pass behind the net from Timonen. He skated out front, and from the top of the left circle threw a shot on net that went over Markkanen's blocker to make it a 1-1 game just 3:44 in.
Edmonton is 2-2 on its current seven-game road trip...Nashville went 0-for-4 on the power play...The Oilers went 1-for-7 with the man advantage...Edmonton will visit Columbus on Friday...Nashville will host Dallas on Thursday...The Predators lost the services of forward Scott Walker, who is scheduled to undergo surgery for a sports hernia that will keep him sidelined for at least eight weeks.
