(Thursday, November 3rd)

Final Score: Philadelphia 8, Washington 1

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jeff Carter, Jon Sim and Simon Gagne scored two goals apiece to lead the Philadelphia Flyers past the Washington Capitals, 8-1, at the Wachovia Center.

Peter Forsberg and Mike Knuble added a goal and two assists each, Joni Pitkanen and Mike Rathje each tallied three assists, and Robert Esche made 29 saves for the Flyers, who won for the third time in their last four games.

Chris Clark scored Washington's lone goal and Brent Johnson made 35 saves for the Caps, who lost for the fourth time in their last five games.

Washington got on the scoreboard after Clark dug the puck out of the left corner, skated out in front and wristed the puck past Esche's glove for the 1-0 lead, 3:40 into the game.

However, Sim put in the tying goal less than four minutes later and Carter scored twice, as the Flyers built a 3-1 advantage after 20 minutes.

Philadelphia netted the equalizer after Sim beat Johnson stick-side high off a rebound at the 7:30 mark. Sim passed the puck into the right corner to Michal Handzus, who threw the puck on net. Johnson made the initial save, but Sim deposited the rebound.

The Flyers took their first lead of the game with 7:29 remaining in the first period after Carter chipped a backhanded shot over Johnson for a 2-1 advantage. Carter wristed a shot on goal from the high slot that was stopped by Johnson, but Carter followed his shot, got the rebound and put it over the fallen netminder.

Carter extended the Flyers lead with 23 seconds left in the first period after he stole the puck at center ice, skated down the left boards and deked a backhand before lifting the puck into the back of the net for his first shorthanded goal of the season.

The Flyers upped their lead to 4-1 early in the second period after Gagne gathered a loose puck in the right corner and flipped the puck into the slot. The puck deflected off of Jeff Halpern's thigh and past Johnson for the goal.

Philadelphia made it 5-1 midway through the second period after Knuble easily beat Johnson off a rebound. Rathje blasted a slap shot from the high slot that Johnson saved, but Knuble was uncovered in front, pulled the rebound to his backhand and beat a diving Johnson.

It became 6-1 with 7:36 left in the second period while the Flyers were the power play. Gagne poked his own rebound past Johnson for his 12th goal of the season.

Philadelphia made it 7-1 with 11 seconds left in the second period after Forsberg gained the offensive zone, skated down the right boards and unleashed a wrist shot that beat Johnson high to the stick side.

Sim scored the final goal, nearly nine minutes into the third. Pitkanen gathered a loose puck in the left corner and sent a pass into the slot. Sim one-timed it past Johnson for his second goal of the game.
