NHL Game Summary - Minnesota at Edmonton

(Tuesday, March 28th)

Final Score: Minnesota 3, Edmonton 2

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Brian Rolston scored the game-winning goal with 9:49 left in the third, as the Minnesota Wild defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 3-2, at Rexall Place.

Wes Walz and Pierre-Marc Bouchard also scored for the Wild, who snapped a six- game road losing streak. Manny Fernandez made 23 saves in the win, while Rolston and Bouchard each also tallied an assist.

"Manny was great for us again tonight and we made the most of our opportunities," Rolston said. "We only had two scoring chances in the third period and that was two too many. I guess it's the mysteries of sports. That's a very good hockey team fighting for a playoff spot and we just seem to have their number."

Sergei Samsonov and Jarret Stoll both scored for the Oilers, who had a modest two-game winning streak halted. Dwayne Roloson allowed three goals on 16 shots faced in the loss.

Edmonton also failed to pick up ground in the playoff race on idle Vancouver and Anaheim, which lost to Colorado on Tuesday. The Oilers remain tied with the Canucks for the seventh spot in the conference with 84 points and two behind the Mighty Ducks for the sixth spot.

"It's another example of how you have to lock down every last detail, or you don't win," said Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish. "We played a very good third period, only allowed them four shots on goal and they scored on two of them because they were quality chances that came as a direct result of our mistakes."

Tied at 2-2, Rolston secured the win for the Wild after he carried the puck up the length of the ice before beating Roloson blocker side from the left circle for his 31st goal of the season.

After a scoreless first period, the Wild took a 1-0 lead on Walz's 17th goal of the season. Marian Gaborik set up the goal short handed as the carried the puck up the ice along the right boards before sending a pass to Walz in front. Walz then easily put the puck into the net from in close 2:29 in.

However, Edmonton responded with two power-play goals to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.

Samsonov tied the game with his 21st tally of the season. Up a man, Ryan Smyth sent a backhand pass from the left circle with his back to the play to Samsonov in the slot and he beat Fernandez with 4:55 left.

Stoll then gave the Oilers the lead after his 21st goal of the season as the center redirected a feed from Chris Pronger from the left side of the net with 2:10 left.

Minnesota tied the contest at 2-2 just 4:18 into the third. After getting ahead of the defense, Bouchard skated in on Roloson, went from his forehand to his backhand and beat the Oiler netminder through his five hole for his 15th goal of the season.
