NHL Game Summary - Edmonton at St. Louis

(Sunday, April 9th)

Final Score: St. Louis 2, Edmonton 1

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Jason Bacashihua stopped 36 shots to lead the St. Louis Blues to a 2-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Al MacInnis night at the Savvis Center

Before the game the Blues retired the No. 2 worn by defenseman MacInnis, who skated for the Blues in nine seasons following a 1994 trade from Calgary. He is the fifth player to have his number honored by the club. He joins Bob Gassoff (No. 3), Barclay Plager (No. 8), Brian Sutter (No. 11) and Bernie Federko (No. 24) in the group.

Jamal Mayers and Mark Rycroft scored goals for the Blues, who stopped a franchise-record 13-game losing streak.

Chris Pronger, who spent nine of his 12 NHL seasons in St. Louis, had the only goal and Dwayne Roloson stopped 16 shots in the loss for the Oilers, who coupled with San Jose's win over Dallas, dropped to the eight spot in the Western Conference playoff race. The Oilers are tied with the Sharks with 91 points, but have one less win and the Sharks have two games in hand.

Edmonton has dropped two of its last three games.

Neither team got on the board in the first period. Despite having four power- play opportunities, St. Louis only managed seven shots on net, but held Edmonton to five shots.

The Blues, though, scored one minute into the second period to assume a 1-0 lead. Jay McClement hit a cruising Mayers at the Edmonton blue line and Mayers let fly with a slap shot from the top of the right circle that beat Roloson into the far corner of the net.

St. Louis got some insurance 90 seconds into the final period. Rycroft brought the puck into the Oilers zone along the left wing, cut out to the center and from the low slot lifted the puck over the right shoulder of Roloson for his sixth goal of the season.

While on the power play and with the goaltender pulled, Pronger let fly with a blast from the high slot that beat Bacashihua with 24.1 seconds left.
