NHL Game Summary - Chicago at Edmonton
(Tuesday, January 3rd)
Final Score: Edmonton 5, Chicago 0
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Ty Conklin made 23 saves for his first shutout of the season as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 5-0, at Rexall Place.
Fernando Pisani scored two goals and Ryan Smyth added a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who have won two of their last three games.
Shawn Horcoff and Jani Rita scored the other goals for Edmonton, which defeated Chicago for the first time in three attempts this season.
"It's just what the doctor ordered for us," said Oilers coach Craig MacTavish. "We played the game the right way. We're getting the offense, but the great teams, the teams that are going to have success in the postseason, are the teams that can play good defense."
Craig Anderson made 24 saves for the Blackhawks, who have a season-high eight- game losing streak.
The Oilers scored quickly for the only goal of the opening 20 minutes. Ales Hemsky brought the puck into the Chicago zone, made a move to get past the defender, waited a second and sent a pass from the right circle to Horcoff on the left side of the net. Horcoff simply redirected the pass into the net just 2:47 into the contest.
Edmonton blew the game open with three second period goals.
Ethan Moreau brought the disc around the net and attempted a wraparound shot that Anderson made a save on. However, Pisani was right on the doorstep and he put the rebound in at the 5:42 mark of the second.
Pisani made it a 3-0 game just 3:07 later on a pretty play. The Oilers won a left circle draw and the puck went to Moreau at the left point. He sent a pass behind the left side of the net to Michael Peca, who immediately passed the disc to Pisani cutting into the slot. Pisani's one-timer went into the right corner of the net for his 13th goal of the season.
Marc-Andre Bergeron slapped a shot from the right point that Anderson made a save on. However, Anderson could not control the rebound and Smyth smacked the puck in from in front of the net with 8:18 left until the second intermission.
Rita scored with 2:01 left in the game thanks to a Chicago turnover to account for the final score.
"They were better than we were," said Blackhawks coach Trent Yawney. "They out battled us, they scored some nice goals and they played hard. Hats off to them, they played hard and deserved the win. We obviously have a lot of work to do."
