NHL Game Summary - Calgary at Edmonton
(Thursday, March 16th)
Final Score: Edmonton 3, Calgary 2 (OT)
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Shawn Horcoff scored 3:04 into overtime to lead the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames at Rexall Place.
Jaroslav Spacek had a goal and an assist and Jarret Stoll notched the other goal for the Oilers, who have won two straight after dropping their previous four games.
Dwayne Roloson stopped 18 shots for Edmonton, which has moved into sole possession of sixth place in the Western Conference playoff race with 78 points, one ahead of Los Angeles and two ahead of Vancouver.
Matthew Lombardi and Mike LeClerc scored goals for the Flames, who have dropped two of their last three games. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 25 shots in the loss.
After Edmonton tied it up in the third period, neither team was able to go ahead and the game went to overtime.
Late in the extra session, Sergei Samsonov brought the puck into the Calgary zone and got some open ice when a Calgary defenseman fell down after stepping on a broken stick. Samsonov got the disc to Horcoff, who from in front of the net, slid the puck through the legs of Kiprusoff to win the game.
"He's such a creative guy," said Horcoff about Samsonov. "He draws so much attention that I just try to find the open ice. We were a little fortunate that their D got tangled up, but that happened because he made a move to go between them and slipped the puck through."
The Oilers were trailing 2-1 heading into the third period, but knotted it up on Stoll's 18th goal of the season.
Stoll received the puck from Spacek and skated into the zone. From down low on the left side of the net he spun around and sent the puck out front, where it banked off of Calgary forward Shean Donovan and into the net 7:12 in.
The Oilers opened up the scoring with a power-play goal. Ryan Smyth had the puck behind the net and sent it to Ales Hemsky along the right boards. Hemsky sent the disc to Spacek, who snapped a one-timer from the high slot for his 10th goal of the season 9:16 into the first period.
The Flames evened the game up when Lombardi poked in the puck during a scrum in front of the net with 6:24 left in the first period.
Calgary grabbed a 2-1 lead halfway through the second period. Donovan got the puck to LeClerc at the left point. LeClerc let fly with a slap shot that Roloson made the save on, but LeClerc skated to the front of the net and punched it in for his 10th goal of the season.
"We played well enough to get a point, but that's about it," said Flames coach Darryl Sutter. "Games like these have such a fine line, we had a disallowed goal on a quick whistle, and we had a broken play on the overtime goal, and that was the difference."
