NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Pittsburgh
(Sunday, March 12th)
Final Score: Pittsburgh 2, Philadelphia 0
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Marc-Andre Fleury made 22 saves for his first shutout of the season as the Pittsburgh Penguins handed the Philadelphia Flyers a 2-0 loss at the Igloo.
Colby Armstrong had both goals and Sidney Crosby had two assists for the Penguins, who have won their last two games.
Pittsburgh snapped a four-game losing streak against Philadelphia and defeated the Flyers for the first time in Pittsburgh since November 27, 2002.
"He was really solid this weekend," said Penguins coach Michel Therrien about Fleury. "It is nice to see him progressing and playing well at this time of year. He's young and he's learning, but that is gonna be good for his confidence the way that he played this weekend. There is no doubt about that and the guys in front of him played a really solid game."
Robert Esche stopped 18 shots for the slumping Flyers, who have lost two straight and six of their last eight games.
"I think we had a very emotional week and I think yesterday's loss took quite a bit out of us," said Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock. "We had a flat first period and then we came back in the second and we hit all the goal posts. We seemed to not have the energy to do the things we needed to do."
The Penguins got the first goal of the game with a power-play tally. Crosby had the puck at the right point and fed it to the slot, where Ryan Whitney one-timed it on net. Esche made the pad save, but the rebound went right out front and Armstrong smacked it in 7:21 into the game.
The Flyers turned up the pressure in the second period and outshot the Penguins 11-4 during the stanza.
But, the post was Fleury's best friend as Philadelphia dinged four shots off the metal during the middle stanza.
The post played a big part early in the third period as the Flyer's Sami Kapanen nailed the far post on a one-timer a little over two minutes into the third period.
Shortly after, Jani Rita forced Joni Pitkanen to cough up the puck in the neutral zone and skated deep into the Flyers zone with the disc. Rita lost the puck, but Crosby picked it up at the low right circle and sent a centering pass to Amrstrong, who one-timed it into the net to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead 2:50 into the final 20 minutes.
The Flyers got a huge break when they received seven minutes of power play time after Andre Roy was called for a game and match misconduct, fighting major and instigation when he jumped Denis Gauthier 9:30 into the third period.
But, they were unable to take advantage and only managed one shot on goal during the extended power play to kill any chances of mounting a comeback.
The Flyers continue their four-game road trip at Florida on Wednesday...Pittsburgh goes on the road for a game against New Jersey on Thursday...The Penguins had not held an opponent to less than three goals for 14 consecutive games prior to this match...Crosby has 74 points on the season, five behind Washington's Alexander Ovechkin for the rookie point scoring lead.
