NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Montreal

(Tuesday, October 25th)

Final Score: Montreal 3, Philadelphia 2 (OT)

Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Mike Ribeiro tied the game midway through the third period and scored the game-winner at 2:28 of the overtime to lift the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at the Bell Centre.

Pierre Dagenais also scored for the Canadiens, who have won three straight contests and ended a six-game home losing streak to the Flyers.

Mike Richards posted a goal and an assist for Philadelphia, which had its winning streak halted at three games. Brian Savage also scored against his former team in the setback.

Robert Esche stopped 26 shots for the Flyers, while Jose Theodore made 20 stops for Montreal.

Ribeiro's second goal of the game and fourth of the year ended this one. Tomas Plekanec fed the puck into the right circle for Ribeiro, who was then given loads of time to set up the wrist shot. He finally unleashed the puck and beat Esche high.

"To come back and score the last two goals of the game feels good for me, but more importantly it's good for the team," said Ribeiro.

The Flyers led 2-1 after two periods, but Montreal evened the score with a power-play marker at 9:19 of the third. Andrei Markov wristed the puck on net from his own end and Esche allowed a huge rebound. Ribeiro picked up the loose puck in the left circle, charged at the net, and deked before sliding a backhand past the goaltender.

Montreal went 1-for-5 on the power play in the third period.

"We seemed to just be defending the whole period," said Savage.

The Canadiens grabbed a 1-0 lead with 4:36 remaining in the first period. Esche stopped a slap shot from the point by Francis Bouillon, but Dagenais was there to dump in the rebound.

Philadelphia evened the score on a power-play goal by Richards at 5:48 of the second stanza. Michal Handzus held the puck in the right circle and found a streaking Richards, who redirected the excellent pass into the goal from just outside the crease.

Montreal had three straight power-play opportunities around the middle portion of the second period, but couldn't score on any of them.

The Flyers would take advantage of a two-man advantage with 4:13 left in the second. Handzus whipped a cross-ice pass to Richards just below the left circle. Richards immediately sent the puck to the right side of the crease for a wide-open Savage, who fanned once before pushing the disc over the line.
