NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Edmonton

(Friday, March 3rd)

Final Score: Edmonton 3, San Jose 2

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Ales Hemsky scored the game-winning goal with 1:07 left in the third period to lift the Edmonton Oilers past the San Jose Sharks, 3-2, at Rexall Place.

Raffi Torres and Shawn Horcoff also scored for the Oilers, who snapped a four- game losing streak. Dick Tarnstrom added two assists as Edmonton defeated San Jose for the third time this season, having beaten the Sharks twice in a shootout earlier in the year.

Ty Conklin, in his first game since January 14, made 19 saves. His last win was on January 3, a shutout against Chicago.

"It's a huge two points for us....probably good for the confidence and go for the next game," said Hemsky. "Hopefully we're back on track."

Edmonton also received a boost after getting back captain Jason Smith and assistant captain Ethan Moreau from injuries. Smith had missed six of the Oilers last seven games with a fractured toe, while Moreau missed the last seven games because of a sprained right ankle.

Smith finished with two assists.

Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton both scored for the Sharks, who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. Vesa Toskala made 27 saves in defeat.

Thornton continues to rack up points this season and now has five goals and nine assists in his last six games.

"It's frustrating but we play tomorrow night so we have to just get right back on the plane and start fresh again overnight," Thornton said. "

With the score knotted at 2-2 and time winding down, Hemsky made a brilliant play to record his 16th goal of the season and seal the win.

After taking a long pass up the ice from Smith, Hemsky broke into the offensive zone and charged towards the net. San Jose's Josh Gorges stood in his way, but Hemsky slipped the puck between Gorges' legs before cutting in front of the net and backhanding a shot past Toskala.

"I get the pass from (Smith) in the middle and I had a little speed and the (defense) was pretty close to me so I just tried to go to the middle and the puck went away a little bit but I catch it and it went in between his legs," Hemsky said of the game winner.

The first two periods of the contest remained scoreless as Conklin and Toskala each stopped 16 shots through two frames.

Torres finally snapped the scoreless tie with his 21st goal of the season 3:29 into the third. San Jose, though, retied the contest just 19 seconds later on Marleau's 27th tally of the year.

San Jose took a 2-1 edge with 4:37 left in the contest after Thornton easily beat a diving Conklin from in front for his 23rd goal of the season.

This time the Oilers responded, netting the equalizer just 1:05 later. After a flurry of offense in San Jose's zone that saw Toskala loose his stick, Horcoff found a loose puck in the slot and flipped it home for his 17th of the year.
