NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Washington

(Wednesday, December 15th)

Final Score: Anaheim 2, Washington 1 (OT)

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Ryan Getzlaf's goal with 57 seconds left in overtime lifted Anaheim over Washington, 2-1, at Verizon Center.

The game-winner was set up by a deep offensive zone pass from Corey Perry. Getzlaf settled the puck and wristed a shot from the left circle that went high past Semyon Varlamov.

"It was a one-on-one situation on the boards," Getzlaf said. "I was kind of waiting for help and I was able to get loose for a second and get a shot through."

Joffrey Lupul had the other goal for Anaheim, which started a seven-game road trip with its third straight win. Jonas Hiller had 31 saves in the win.

"When you play such a skilled team like Washington you have to play together," Hiller said.

Brooks Laich notched the lone goal for the Capitals, who are deep in a December slump at 1-5-2 -- the streak includes seven losses in a row.

Varlamov had 22 saves in the latest setback.

"I see us winning a lot of hockey games in the future. But right now it's frustrating because no one is used to this," Washington head coach Bruce Boudreau said of the losing streak.

The Capitals received a much-needed first goal with 5:38 left in the first period. During the play, John Carlson's initial shot was deflected by a crowd in front of the net, but Laich backhanded the rebound home from the slot.

Washington narrowly missed a 2-0 lead less than a minute later when Laich's wrister trickled between Hiller's legs toward the goal line and Getzlaf was able to clear it out before the puck crossed the line.

Midway through the second period, the Caps had another scoring opportunity on a 3-on-1 rush, but the Ducks' netminder made a diving stick save to thwart the chance.

Anaheim tied the game 12:47 into the second period during a power play on Lupul's second goal of the season. The Ducks worked the puck from the point and Cam Fowler sent it toward the net. Lupul then stuffed his own deflection under Varlamov.

The third period was left unblemished as Anaheim led the shooting edge 7-5 and then rifled off three shots in overtime while holding Washington to just one.
