NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at San Jose
(Saturday, October 30th)
Final Score: San Jose 5, Anaheim 2
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Dany Heatley scored twice and added an assist, as the San Jose Sharks stayed hot with a 5-2 win over the Anaheim Ducks at HP Pavilion.
Joe Thornton had three assists for the Sharks, who have won four of their last five games and scored 20 goals in that span. The only loss in the stretch was a 4-0 decision against Calgary.
"When we came back from Europe we didn't have any rhythm in our game...now we're starting to find that," said Sharks head coach Todd McLellan. "Even in practices, you can see they're settled in a little bit more and prepared to go. Routine is real important for us. I think you're starting to see the benefits of that."
Antero Niittymaki made 22 saves as San Jose also resumed its dominance of the Ducks -- the Sharks won five of the six matchups last season.
Curtis McElhinney allowed all five goals on 41 shots for the Ducks, who were coming off Friday's home loss to New Jersey.
"We didn't really seem to get involved in the game from our standpoint," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "You can't come into this building and expect them not to be coming out and jumping at you."
San Jose got the jump on Anaheim with two goals early in the first period.
Heatley scored his first just 36 seconds in. Just after a faceoff, Dan Boyle ripped a shot from the right point and McElhinney blocked it. But the puck bounced to his right, where Thornton pushed it out front for Heatley's quick backhand swipe into an open net.
A few minutes later with the Sharks on the power play, Logan Couture spun in the circle and fired a wrister through traffic, making it a 2-0 contest at 4:45.
San Jose was back on the power play early in the second period, when Joe Pavelski gathered the puck to the right of the goal. He managed to get a pass through the legs of Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman, and Heatley one timed it past McElhinney from the left side at 2:08.
Niclas Wallin and Patrick Marleau scored later in the period to make it a 5-0 game, and San Jose held on in the third period, though Anaheim did get power- play goals from Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry.
Thornton recorded his second three-assist game of the season (also October 23 at Edmonton). He has five goals and 10 assists through nine games...Teemu Selanne assisted on both Ducks goals.
