NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Detroit

(Saturday, October 23rd)

Final Score: Detroit 5, Anaheim 4

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Pavel Datsyuk scored the game-winner with 11.4 seconds remaining in regulation, as the Detroit Red Wings snuck past the Anaheim Ducks, 5-4, at Joe Louis Arena.

With time winding down, Datsyuk controlled the puck at the left circle. He made a move past an Anaheim player before firing a wrister past Curtis McElhinney for Detroit's third straight win.

Henrik Zetterberg had two goals and two assists for the Red Wings, who also got goals from Johan Franzen and Tomas Holmstrom. Jimmy Howard made 21 saves.

"We needed the points and we got them," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "I thought we played good in the first period, we stood around for the first 10 minutes of the second and let them get back into it. You can't do that in this league, but we got lucky there."

Bobby Ryan had a goal and an assist for the Ducks, who were trying to post consecutive victories for the first time this year. Ryan Carter, Danny Syvret, and Teemu Selanne also lit the lamp for Anaheim, which got 36 saves from McElhinney.

"We had a 3-1 lead in the building and then we stopped doing the things we were doing," said Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle. "With the skill level they have, when you stop playing hockey they're gonna make you pay."

Zetterberg's power-play goal got the Red Wings on the board at the 7:42 mark. Holmstrom slid a pass from behind the net to the point for Nicklas Lidstrom, who passed the disc to the right circle. Zetterberg was there for a one-timer.

The Ducks tied the game with 22 seconds left in the first. Ryan Getzlaf slid a pass from behind the net to Ryan, whose wrister from the bottom of the right circle beat Howard.

Carter scored at the 6:34 mark of the second to give Anaheim a 2-1 lead. Just over 30 seconds later, Syvret fired a shot off the post and past the line for a 3-1 lead.

Franzen stuffed home his own rebound at the 10:23 mark to cut the deficit to 3-2. With 2:52 remaining, Holmstrom deflected Brad Stuart's shot from the point past McElhinney for a 3-3 game.

Selanne put the Ducks ahead at the 8:32 mark of the third. Selanne gathered the puck at center ice and skated down the right side of the ice. His snap shot snuck through the pads of Howard.

Detroit tied things again at the 11:17 mark. Stuart's shot from the point deflected off Zetterberg's stick and into the net.
