NHL Game Summary - Washington at Tampa Bay
(Saturday, March 20th)
Final Score: Washington 3, Tampa Bay 1
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Alex Ovechkin returned from his two-game suspension to post a goal, as the Washington Capitals downed the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-1, at St. Pete Times Forum.
Ovechkin sat out the last two games as he served a suspension for shoving Chicago defenseman Brian Campbell into the boards last Sunday.
Tomas Fleischmann and Alexander Semin each had a goal while Jose Theodore made 33 stops for the Capitals, who have won three of four.
"I thought he was outstanding," Caps coach Bruce Boudreau said of Theodore. "I felt so comfortable with him in the net tonight. It was a really good feeling."
Washington is closing in on the President's Trophy as the team now has 106 points, which is nine more than Chicago.
Vincent Lecavalier scored the lone goal while Antero Niittymaki made 25 stops for the Lightning, who have dropped their past four games.
"What can I say, I haven't been winning games," said Niittymaki. "At one point in my career I lost 15 straight. But you have to keep your spirits up and keep working. It'll come around eventually."
Washington got on the board 2:40 into the contest when Eric Fehr threw a saucer pass from the right boards to the front where Fleischmann batted it into the net.
Tampa got the goal back at the 6:54 mark of the first on Lecavalier's 22nd goal of the season, but the Caps made it a 2-1 game with 9:13 left as Ovechkin skated in on a breakaway and stickhandled to the forehand before burying it for his 45th goal of the season.
The second period passed scoreless as Theodore stopped 13 shots and Niittymaki made nine saves in the frame.
Washington made it a 3-1 game at the 7:20 mark of the final frame when Semin banged in a rebound off a Brooks Laich shot for his 33rd goal of the season.
From there, Theodore made the stops to keep Washington in front and grab the win.
