NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Chicago
(Sunday, December 13th)
Final Score: Chicago 4, Tampa Bay 0
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Antti Niemi made 18 saves for his third shutout of the season, as the Chicago Blackhawks took a 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at United Center.
Marian Hossa had a goal and an assist for Chicago, which opened a five-game homestand and rebounded from a loss at Buffalo on Friday. Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Ben Eager also scored in the victory.
"We knew we just needed to be better 5-on-5, because we've got lots of talent. But we just have to work harder," Hossa said. "Tonight, we created much more offense, we played much better 5-on-5. You work hard, good things happen."
Antero Niittymaki allowed all four goals on 29 shots for Tampa Bay, which has dropped four in a row and eight of nine overall. The Lightning have been shut out three times in that stretch.
Kane put the Blackhawks on the board shortly into the first period. He accepted Duncan Keith's pass as he crossed the blue line, skated to the right circle and wristed a shot past Niittymaki at 7:42.
Chicago didn't capitalize on a pair of 5-on-3s in the period, but extended its lead by two in the second.
Hossa sent a pass in front from behind the goal line, and Eager one-timed it in at 10:42. Nine minutes later, with just 15.3 seconds left, Hossa's shot from the left circle beat Niittymaki to make it 3-0.
"We actually didn't give them much there for a while," Lightning head coach Rick Tocchet said. "Then we gave them that second goal, which was just a pretty bad blunder, and then couldn't recover. They're a quick team, they're a fast hockey club."
Toews stuffed in a rebound 6:01 into the final period to push Chicago's lead to four, and Troy Brouwer had a chance to put the Blackhawks up by five with 1:40 left on a penalty shot. But he was unsuccessful, and Niemi made four saves in the third to seal the shutout.
